Train 321 Is Now an Approved California RBS Training Provider

California alcohol servers and managers can now complete their required Responsible Beverage Service training with Train 321.

We have some exciting news for California restaurants, hospitality businesses, and alcohol servers: Train 321 is now approved by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) as a Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) Training Provider.

That means California alcohol servers and managers who are required to complete RBS training can now complete their approved training through Train 321 as part of the state's certification process.

But what exactly is RBS training, who needs it, and what happens after you finish the course?

Here's what you need to know.

What Is California RBS Training?

California's Responsible Beverage Service Training Program was created to help alcohol servers and their managers understand how to serve alcoholic beverages safely and responsibly.

The program focuses on reducing alcohol-related harm, including underage drinking and over-service, while helping servers understand their responsibilities under California law.

RBS training became mandatory for covered alcohol servers and managers on July 1, 2022.

Who Needs RBS Certification?

RBS requirements generally apply to alcohol servers and managers working at businesses with on-premises alcohol consumption, including:

  • Restaurants
  • Bars
  • Hotels
  • Tasting rooms
  • Clubs
  • Stadiums
  • Movie theaters
  • Caterers

An alcohol server can include someone who checks identification, takes alcoholic beverage orders, pours drinks, or delivers alcoholic beverages to customers.

Managers who directly supervise alcohol servers are also subject to the RBS requirements.

How Does California RBS Certification Work?

California uses a three-step certification process.

Step 1: Register with California ABC

Before taking RBS training, the server must create an account in California's RBS Portal, register as an alcohol server, pay the applicable state registration fee, and obtain a Server ID number.

Step 2: Complete Training with an Approved Provider

Next, the server must complete training through an ABC-approved RBS Training Provider.

That's where Train 321 comes in.

Train 321's California RBS course has been approved by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and satisfies the training-provider portion of the state's RBS certification process.

Step 3: Pass the California ABC Exam

After completing the Train 321 course, the server must return to the California RBS Portal and take the ABC Alcohol Server Certification Exam.

The certification exam is administered by California ABC—not by Train 321.

Servers must pass the state exam within 30 days after their training is confirmed.

How Long Do New Employees Have to Become Certified?

Covered alcohol servers and managers generally must complete the RBS certification process within 60 days of their first date of employment.

Remember, simply completing an RBS training course does not mean the server is certified.

To become RBS certified, the individual must:

Register with ABC → Complete approved RBS training → Pass the ABC certification exam

All three steps are required.

How Long Is California RBS Certification Valid?

California RBS certification is valid for three years.

Before the certification expires, the server must complete the recertification process, which again includes completing training through an approved provider and passing the ABC Alcohol Server Certification Exam.

Why Responsible Beverage Service Training Matters

For restaurants and hospitality businesses, RBS training is more than another compliance box to check.

Well-trained alcohol servers are better equipped to recognize situations that can create risk for the guest, the business, and the community.

California's required curriculum addresses important responsible-service topics such as preventing sales to minors, recognizing signs of intoxication, avoiding over-service, understanding alcohol laws and responsibilities, and responding appropriately to potentially unsafe situations.

The goal is simple: safer service, better decisions, and fewer preventable problems.
